QTS analyse waters liable to contain pesticide residues and therefore having the potential to introduce these compounds onto crops or into the environment.

Irrigation waters are frequently taken from surface water sources. Here there is a risk of run off from surrounding land bringing about contamination with pesticides previously applied elsewhere, possibly harmful and irrelevant to the product being cultivated. Waters may also become contaminated with potent general herbicides that interfere with plant growth.

Waste waters from fruit/vegetable processing (wash waters) can become contaminated with residues and discharges to the public waste water systems need to be monitored.

In both cases, screenings of the waters can be for a broad range of compounds – a multiresidue screen as detailed below – or tests can be confined to known risks eg residues of post harvest fungicides applied to potatoes

Full fat fungicide
Milk's fungicidal powers were discovered by Wagner Bettiol of the environmental laboratory of Embrapa, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, in Jaguariuna, north of São Paulo. Bettiol, who was looking for cheap ways to control plant pests, observed that byproducts from milk-processing factories killed powdery mildew on courgettes. So he decided to simply spray fresh milk on the plants to see if it had the same effect. To his surprise, he found that it did. In fact, spraying heavily infected plants twice a week with a mixture of one part cow's milk to nine parts WATER was at least as good at stopping mildew as the chemical fungicides fenarimol and benomyl, Bettiol discovered.
